How we work

Federal sources first, your state second

  1. We start with official pages. U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, the EPA and the IRS. Every guide lists its sources with the date we checked them.
  2. State rules are labeled. Rebates, permits and utility programs differ by state. When we mention one, we name the state and remind you to check your own.
  3. Pros for the risky parts. Refrigerant, gas and electrical work is for licensed, certified technicians. We show you what to check and what to ask.

General information only, not professional, tax or legal advice. Rules, rebates and tax credits change and vary by state and utility: check the official source, and use a licensed HVAC contractor for repairs, refrigerant and electrical work.
